The Volkswagen California is among the best-known campervans with the longest heritage, and an all-new generation has now been unveiled, billed as its most innovative yet.
Unlike every previous generation, which was based on the Transporter commercial vehicle, it moves away from those roots by using the new long-wheelbase Multivan as its starting point. The Multivan sits on Volkswagen’s MQB architecture, the passenger-car platform also used by models such as the Golf and Passat.
Although its exterior styling gives little away beyond its Multivan origins, the cabin provides six seats and, depending on the version, several generously sized storage areas, a compact kitchen with a hob and sink, tables, and even a bed. The pop-up roof also creates an additional sleeping area.
Volkswagen California: new doors and a more flexible cabin
The new Volkswagen California introduces further changes, including two sliding side doors rather than the single door offered by its predecessors. This makes it possible to set up camp - quite literally - on either side of the vehicle.
Inside, the rear bench has been replaced by individual seats that can be arranged in several layouts. This answers requests from a number of customers and, for instance, makes it possible to carry bicycles within the cabin.
Another new feature is a control unit located on one of the California’s rear pillars. It can operate the onboard lighting and other functions, including the fresh-water and waste-water levels. Alternatively, all these functions can be managed through a smartphone app.
California debuts plug-in hybrid power
There are three powertrain options for the Volkswagen California. The range starts with the familiar 2.0 TDI four-cylinder diesel engine, producing 150 PS. Next is the turbocharged, direct-injection 1.5 TSI petrol unit, which develops 204 PS. Both versions send their power exclusively to the front wheels.
The major development is the introduction of a plug-in hybrid powertrain, pairing the 1.5 TSI petrol engine with a second electric motor integrated into the gearbox. Together, they deliver a claimed maximum combined output of 245 PS. For the first time in a Volkswagen Group model based on the MQB platform, this powertrain is combined with the 4Motion all-wheel-drive system.
Volkswagen has not yet provided figures for either battery capacity or all-electric range. Even so, this option gives the California fresh appeal as an everyday vehicle.
When will the new Volkswagen California arrive?
Pre-sales for the new California are expected to begin in June, with five versions on offer: Beach, Beach Tour, Beach Camper, Coast and Ocean.
The first examples are expected to reach the local market during the second half of the year. Final pricing has not yet been fully confirmed.
