The current-generation SL (R 232) is arguably the sportiest iteration ever, having been developed by AMG. However, buyers seeking an SL defined by a different set of superlatives now have a new choice from the three-pointed star: the Mercedes-Maybach SL 680 Monogram Series.
It is based on the formidable Mercedes-AMG SL 63, which uses the charismatic, thunderous 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 producing 585 hp. Yet the Mercedes-Maybach SL 680 is all about luxury, opulence… and comfort.
Mercedes-Maybach has focused on raising refinement and onboard comfort still further. It features extra sound insulation, a retuned exhaust note, and recalibrated accelerator pedal and suspension settings. Even the V8 engine mounts have been replaced with… softer units.
As a result, the SL 680 should be more of a Grand Tourer than a sports car, leaving the more aggressive genes to its relative from Affalterbach.
Distinctive Mercedes-Maybach SL 680 design
Unveiled at Monterey Car Week, Maybach’s new model distinguishes itself from the SL already known through its bespoke illuminated grille and the exclusivity of two two-tone paint finishes: red or white, each paired with a black bonnet. The bonnet can also be customised with a pattern derived from the Maybach emblem - applied by hand.
The differences do not end there, as unique details are plentiful: from the chrome windscreen surround and air intakes carrying the brand’s logo pattern, to the rose-gold finishes inside the headlamps, exclusive 21-inch wheels available in two designs, bespoke rear lights and rear diffuser, plus the ‘humps’ behind the two seats. In the process, it loses the small rear seats.
Sumptuous interior
The Mercedes-Maybach SL 680 cabin is equally striking thanks to its extensive use of crystal white Nappa leather. The upper section of the dashboard contrasts with a black trim finish. The steering wheel also receives a unique finish, while the pedals and door sills are made from stainless steel.
Its distinction from other SL models goes beyond colours and materials, extending to the displays themselves. Both the digital instrument panel and the adjustable central touchscreen feature graphics and animations exclusive to Maybach.
When does it arrive?
Mercedes-Maybach announced that the first deliveries would take place in spring 2025. Pricing has not yet been disclosed, although it is safe to expect it to be very high.
For reference, the Mercedes-AMG SL 63 starts at close to €260,000 in Portugal. The Mercedes-Maybach SL 680 Monogram Series is expected to sit above it.
