Peugeot has begun 2026 on a high note, unveiling the updated 408 at the Brussels Motor Show. The model is already available in Portugal, with prices starting from €37,065.

First introduced in 2023, the French crossover adopts the same styling and technology updates seen on its 308 sibling, while also gaining a plug-in hybrid option that is exclusive within the French brand’s line-up.

The front lighting units are now split, separating the main headlamps from the light signature. On higher-specification versions, the signature’s “three claws” are linked by shorter segments. At the rear, while the 308 retains the brand badge, the 408 replaces it with “Peugeot” lettering, illuminated from behind on every version.

Peugeot 408 interior and technology

Inside, the updated Peugeot 408 remains centred around the i-Cockpit, combining two 10-inch displays for the instrument panel and infotainment system. Beneath the latter sits the i-Toggle: a compact display that lets drivers pin shortcuts for the functions they use most often while driving.

Powertrains for (almost) every preference

Under the bonnet, the new Peugeot 408 continues to be offered with the same petrol, plug-in hybrid and fully electric powertrains.

The key development concerns the plug-in hybrid, whose combined output has risen by 15 hp, from 225 hp to 240 hp, alongside an increase in all-electric range. With its larger battery, providing 14.2 kWh of usable capacity, the 408 Plug-in Hybrid now claims up to 85 km (WLTP) between charges. Charging at 7.4 kW takes around 2 hours and 5 minutes.

Otherwise, there is little to report. The range still starts with the 408 Hybrid 145 hp, pairing the familiar 1.2 Turbo petrol engine with a small 21 kW (29 hp) electric motor supplied by a 48 V mild-hybrid system. Although systems of this kind do not usually allow fully electric driving, the 408 is an exception.

At steady speeds, and whenever the battery has sufficient charge, the French crossover can drive in “zero-emissions” mode, with claimed average consumption of only 5 l/100 km.

Electric Peugeot E-408

At the top of the range is the E-408, powered by a 213 hp (157 kW) electric motor and a 58.2 kWh battery. This delivers a combined WLTP range of up to 456 km.

The E-408 supports rapid direct-current (DC) charging at up to 120 kW, allowing the battery to be replenished from 20% to 80% in around 30 minutes.

From €37,065

The updated Peugeot 408 is offered exclusively in two trim levels: Allure and GT. In Allure specification, the French crossover comes with keyless entry and start, dual-zone automatic air conditioning, rear parking sensors, full-LED headlamps, Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop & Go, and 17-inch alloy wheels - or 19-inch wheels on the plug-in hybrid - among other equipment.

The better-equipped GT version adds features such as LED Matrix headlamps, front parking sensors, Level 2 semi-autonomous driving, an electric tailgate and further extras. Discover the prices across the full range:
