There has always been something wonderfully mischievous about a John Cooper Works MINI. These are the cars that result when ‘FUN’ is underlined, highlighted and circled on the design moodboard. Shaped by motorsport and developed for the circuit, they are nonetheless involving and usable every day – the sort of cars that make you wish Eau Rouge could somehow feature on the school run.

Every JCW, after all, has motorsport running through it. Not an imitation of motorsport, but genuine, chequered-flag-winning competition pedigree.

MINI has now introduced a completely fresh JCW range to suit every driver and every journey. There are five models: petrol or electric, rapid, unruly and unmistakably MINI.

MINI John Cooper Works Hatch and JCW Convertible

The new MINI John Cooper Works Hatch is the starting point. The original. It takes the classic MINI formula and makes it more concentrated and more highly charged. Its 170 kW output, 0–100 km/h sprint of 6.1 seconds and chassis tuned for serious circuit work deliver a memorable drive on road or track. A short wheelbase, firmer dampers and more performance-focused brakes all play their part.

For those who prefer their antics with a little extra vitamin D, there is the JCW Convertible. It uses the same turbocharged terrier engine, but does away with the roof. The roof retracts fully in only 18 seconds, leaving nothing overhead and allowing you to hear the distinctive sporting pops and bangs as they fire through the exhaust. It is an open-air riot designed for winding roads.

JCW Countryman ALL4: power with practicality

Want greater muscle? The JCW Countryman ALL4 takes performance and power to the maximum with 233 kW. To repeat: 233 kW. It has all-wheel drive and reaches 0–100 km/h in only 5.4 seconds. This is the grown-up JCW, with capacity for bicycles, dogs and ambition. Its elevated stance, intelligent ALL4 all-wheel drive, rapid acceleration, handling, response and traction mean it is as happy clipping kerbs at a track day as it is heading off on a weekend adventure.

All-Electric JCW Hatch and JCW Aceman

JCW is no longer solely about petrol power. There are now new JCW options to experience. The first-ever All-Electric JCW Hatch combines everything expected of the badge – immediate throttle response, assured handling and an energetic chassis – with 190 kW of battery-powered urgency. It is near-silent yet untamed. A 0–100 km/h time of 5.9 seconds confirms that it is far from slow, helped by E-Launch Control: a dedicated setting that provides smoother, quicker standing-start acceleration in an all-electric JCW for the greatest possible go-kart sensation.

The wildcard is the all-electric JCW Aceman. This compact crossover delivers plenty of enjoyment alongside unexpected practicality, offering space for five people and 355 km of range. However, it is not an ordinary EV. With 350 Nm of torque and steering sharper than a scalpel, it is a true driver’s car. It is a different kind of MINI: still cheeky, still easy to throw about, still JCW.

What unites every model is the badge, its heritage and what it represents. JCW is not simply lettering on the boot; it is the most uncompromising expression of MINI DNA. Every model sits lower, feels more tightly wound and looks more aggressive. Performance is built into each one from the outset.

The driving experience is matched by personalisation, too. No two JCWs have to appear alike. A choice of paint finishes, optional red or black bonnet stripes featuring MINI logos, up to 20-inch JCW wheel designs – including Union Jack details and race-inspired elements – plus a broad selection of JCW accessories allow every car to be made your own.

Every model features a considered, sporting cockpit with a JCW sports steering wheel and high-resolution OLED display. Measuring 240 mm in diameter, the new central cluster provides all the essential information.

So which JCW suits you? The track-day purist? The weekend cruiser? The family adventurer? The urban sprinter? The electric renegade?

Whichever you are, there is a JCW for you. Petrol or electric, roof up or down: JCW is more than a badge. It is a promise – a promise of fun.
