Three years have elapsed since the French marque announced the return of the iconic Renault 5. Now, its production version has finally been unveiled as the brand’s latest fully electric model.
It replaces the Zoe, which was on sale for 12 years, yet the two cars could hardly be more different. Renault’s vision for its electric future looks back to its heritage, but never “overdoes” the retro theme.
Guilherme Costa has already seen the new Renault 5 on the outskirts of Paris, France, and reveals everything you need to know about this highly evocative model:
A blend of past and present
One glance is enough to identify it as a Renault 5. Its silhouette is unmistakable and, whether viewed from the front or rear, several styling cues immediately bring previous generations to mind. Even so, the overall design is modern and refined, inside and out.
The cabin is every bit as evocative as the exterior, while its atmosphere remains fully in line with the latest models to reach the market. Once again, it features distinctive details, as shown in the video, from the pockets on the backs of the front seats to the end of the transmission control.
On the technology front, the new Renault 5 features a new Google-based infotainment system, providing access to the company’s main apps. It also introduces Reno, a new virtual assistant with access to ChatGPT features.
Up to 400 km of range
The new Renault 5 is based on the new AmpR Small platform - previously known as CMF-B EV - which is exclusive to fully electric models. It uses a single configuration, with just one front-mounted motor driving the front wheels.
However, three power outputs will be offered: 70 kW (95 hp), 88 kW (120 hp) and 110 kW (150 hp).
Two battery options will power the electric motors: 40 kWh and 52 kWh units, offering ranges of 300 km and 400 km respectively.
One noteworthy aspect of this new platform is its integrated multilink rear axle - as seen in the video - which raises expectations for its dynamic ability.
Renault 5 arrival date and pricing
The new Renault 5 is due to arrive on the domestic market in the third quarter of this year, with prices starting from €25,000.
Initially, however, only the more powerful versions fitted with the higher-capacity battery - and therefore carrying higher prices - will be available. The more affordable range options will follow somewhat later.
