MG has just expanded its European model range with the second-generation MG3, a B-segment supermini intended to rival cars such as the Renault Clio and Toyota Yaris.
While the first-generation model was sold only in selected markets, the new MG3 retains compact dimensions and a strong emphasis on versatility. However, it adopts bolder styling and hybrid power to compete in one of the market’s most hotly contested segments.
Slightly longer and wider than the previous combustion-only MG3, the new model is expected to reach the Portuguese market during spring.
One powertrain only
The new MG3 uses the British brand’s new Hybrid+ system - a full hybrid that does not require plug-in charging - from a company now within Chinese giant SAIC Motor’s portfolio. It combines a 1.5-litre, 102 hp petrol engine with a 100 kW (136 hp) electric motor, delivering a combined output of 195 hp.
This system is considerably more powerful than the hybrid units used by the Clio, which produces 145 hp, and the Yaris, which offers up to 136 hp. Its full-hybrid battery is also larger than average, at 1.36 kWh, and is fitted beneath the rear seats.
Power is sent to the front wheels through a three-speed automatic gearbox, one of this model’s distinguishing features. Renault uses a multimode transmission - an exclusive solution - while Toyota continues to rely on continuously variable transmissions.
MG claims a 0–100 km/h time of 8.0 seconds for the MG3, making it the quickest-accelerating hybrid in its class, while 80–120 km/h takes 5.0 seconds. Top speed is set at 170 km/h.
In addition, MG quotes combined fuel consumption of just 4.4 l/100 km and CO₂ emissions of 100 g/km.
MG3 Hybrid+ operating modes
The MG3’s hybrid technology offers several operating modes, beginning with the “EV” electric mode, provided sufficient battery charge is available.
In “Series” mode, which operates as a series hybrid, the petrol engine works as a generator while the electric motor alone drives the car. “Series and Charge” works in exactly the same way, except that the electric motor-generator is also used to recharge the battery when its charge level is low.
In “Drive and Charge” mode, the combustion engine provides propulsion while the electric motor-generator can recharge the battery.
Finally, “Parallel” mode - a parallel-hybrid configuration - allows the petrol and electric motors to work together to drive the wheels, making all 195 hp available.
What about space?
The new MG3 measures 4.11 m long, 1.80 m wide and 1.50 m high, making it one of the larger models in the B segment. It is bigger than the Clio in every dimension, and the gaps are even greater when compared with the Yaris.
As a result, the MG3 is expected to make a strong showing for interior room. Its boot offers 293 litres of luggage capacity, a figure in line with its rivals: the Clio claims 300 litres and the Yaris has 286 litres.
What equipment does it offer?
Available in three trim levels - Standard, Comfort and Luxury - the new MG3 comes as standard with smartphone integration via Android Auto or Apple CarPlay, rear parking sensors, a rear parking-assistance camera, lane-keeping and lane-departure systems, cruise control with speed control, and a forward-collision warning.
Higher-specification versions also include a 360º parking camera, keyless entry, synthetic-leather seats, and heated front seats and steering wheel.
The multimedia system centres on a 10.25-inch display, paired with a 7-inch digital instrument cluster.
When will it arrive?
The new MG3 is expected to arrive on the Portuguese market in spring, although MG has yet to confirm this officially. Prices have also not yet been confirmed.
