Peugeot begins 2023 in a position of real strength. As well as holding the title of Portugal’s sales leader, it has another compelling asset: the new Peugeot 408.

A completely new model in the French marque’s line-up, it blends an SUV’s ground clearance with the sporting proportions of a fastback. Available in Portugal from 33,300 euros, it comes with a choice of three trim levels and three powertrains.

We travelled to the Arrábida Natural Park to find out which Peugeot 408 version is the best. The answer is in this video:

2023 Plug-in Hybrid of the Year in Portugal

The new Peugeot 408 has been named 2023 Plug-in Hybrid of the Year in Portugal. This award recognises the French brand’s plug-in hybrid system, which delivers up to 62 km of all-electric range (WLTP).

This electric element is what enables the Peugeot 408 PLUG-IN HYBRID to claim fuel consumption of 1.3 l/100 km. With 110 hp, the electric motor can power the car without assistance from the combustion engine at speeds of up to 135 km/h.

Whichever model is selected, every 408 Plug-in Hybrid is based around the brand’s familiar 1.6 PureTech engine: a petrol unit delivering a combined output of either 180 hp or 225 hp.

A Peugeot 408 for families

The Peugeot 408 range starts with the 130 hp 1.2 PureTech version. It is the most affordable version of the French fastback.

With a claimed consumption figure of 6.0 l/100 km, this engine takes the Peugeot 408 to a top speed of 211 km/h. It could prove to be the most popular choice among Portuguese families.

Prices start at 33,300 euros for the Allure version. This trim already includes automatic air conditioning, the latest-generation infotainment system with i-Toggles shortcut keys, 17-inch alloy wheels and LED headlights, among other features.

Those wanting a more comprehensive equipment list can opt for the Allure Pack. For an additional 1,500 euros, it adds features such as keyless entry and start, front parking sensors and larger special-design alloy wheels.

More technology and equipment

The GT version represents the Peugeot 408 at its most accomplished and is available from 37,750 euros. Its bodywork lines are highlighted by a specific grille, full-LED headlights and 19-inch special-design alloy wheels.

Inside, the exclusive GT finishes take centre stage, particularly the sports seats, dashboard with customisable stitching and the steering wheel specific to this version.

These features are complemented by a technological environment enhanced by the 3D i-Cockpit system, which presents all key driving information across two separate display planes.

Visit the Peugeot website and configure the 408 to suit your preferences. Five exterior colours and three interior trims are available.
