Volkswagen ID.2 GTI Clubsport: 282 PS and front-wheel drive

The GTI badge is set to remain part of Volkswagen’s line-up, even as the brand moves towards an entirely electric future. The first model of this new chapter to wear it will be the Volkswagen ID.2 - one of Volkswagen’s most significant forthcoming cars in Europe.

Currently shown as the ID. GTI Concept, the model “revives the idea of sporty driving with the character required for everyday use”, according to Volkswagen chief executive Thomas Schäfer.

When it reaches showrooms, this all-electric hot hatch is expected to produce around 226 PS. However, Volkswagen is not expected to stop there, with more highly tuned versions also under consideration.

Volkswagen ID.2 GTI Clubsport: front-wheel drive and nearly 300 PS

Speaking to Autocar, the brand’s engineers confirmed that they are developing a Clubsport version. As with the Golf GTI, it should pair a power increase with mechanical and electronic upgrades to deliver an even more sporting driving experience.

Those in charge indicate that peak output could rise substantially, from 226 PS in the standard model to 282 PS - an increase of 56 PS. Among the mechanical enhancements, the ID.2 GTI Clubsport is expected to feature a mechanical limited-slip differential with torque-vectoring capability.

The changes are not expected to end there. To ensure power is delivered smoothly and predictably, engineers are also considering a “virtual gearbox” function - similar to the system used by the Hyundai IONIQ 5 N. It could reduce the jolts felt under hard acceleration while replicating the stepped response of a conventional gearbox.

Should the Clubsport variant prove insufficient, an ID.2 R is also on the way, bringing all-wheel drive and around 400 PS. Take a look:

Like the regular ID.2, the GTI versions will use the MEB Entry platform, which promises up to 450 km of WLTP range in the ID.2. That figure is nevertheless expected to be slightly lower in the sporting models.

When will it arrive?

Although the Volkswagen ID.2 is scheduled to be unveiled at the Munich Motor Show in September, no firm launch dates have yet been announced for the GTI variants.

Even so, all signs point to their reveal taking place by the end of the year, with the first cars expected to reach the market in 2026.
