The new Honda CR-V is the most family-focused model in the Japanese brand’s SUV line-up planned for this year, joining the all-new ZR-V and the electric e:Ny1.

Over almost three decades, its recognisable silhouette has steadily evolved, alongside the versatility and interior space it provides. For this sixth generation, however, the Honda CR-V will place greater emphasis on driving and an expanded electrified range.

Honda CR-V hybrid powertrains

As anticipated, the new Honda CR-V will not be offered in Europe with petrol-only powertrains, with hybrid systems the only options available.

One is the e:HEV system, which is the same as that fitted to the latest-generation Civic. It combines a 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine with two electric motors.

The new addition is a plug-in hybrid, named e:PHEV, which is making its debut in the CR-V. Its powertrain is otherwise identical to that of the non-plug-in hybrid version, using the same combustion engine and two electric motors.

The key difference is its larger-capacity battery, allowing the new Honda CR-V e:PHEV to travel up to 82 km in fully electric mode.

No battery specifications have yet been released, although Honda says the system can be fully recharged in just 2.5 hours.

Honda CR-V with a stronger presence

The sixth-generation Honda CR-V adopts a fresh design that brings it closer to other members of the range, including the HR-V and the new ZR-V.

Even so, it has a sportier appearance and a more assertive road presence than its predecessor.

At the front, the larger grille with the badge positioned centrally is a notable feature, as are the slimmer headlamps. At the rear, the lighting retains cues familiar from earlier generations, but with a more modern look.

More space and updated technology

In terms of size, the new Honda CR-V is wider, longer and taller than the model it replaces. Its wheelbase is also 40 mm longer, increasing the available interior room.

Honda states that there is an additional 16 mm of space for the front seats, as well as more than 18% extra luggage capacity.

Inside, the new CR-V will feature Honda’s latest infotainment system. It can also be paired with a sound system developed by Bose.

When will it arrive?

The sixth-generation Honda CR-V will reach the European market by the end of this year. Prices have not yet been announced.
