It is not merely a name making a comeback. The new Volvo XC70 returns with figures that make it the Swedish brand’s longest-range plug-in hybrid (PHEV): up to 200 km in fully electric mode. That figure would be lower in Europe - as we explain later.
Its styling is unmistakably Volvo: Scandinavian, clean and free of unnecessary embellishment. In size, it sits just above the XC60 and below the XC90.
For the time being, it will not be sold in Europe. Sales will begin in China, although the brand says it is considering introducing it in other markets. This comes as Volvo shifts part of its production from China to Europe, including that of the EX30.
The first impact has already been seen: its price has fallen. The Swedish brand’s smallest SUV now costs under €30,000 before VAT - an important consideration given that the electric-car market is dominated by company buyers.
Volvo XC70 technology
The XC70 debuts the new SMA (Scalable Modular Architecture) platform, which appears to be an evolution of the CMA platform used by the current Volvo XC40.
In the XC70, the architecture has been specially modified to accommodate plug-in hybrid powertrains with greater electric capability, larger batteries and fast-charging systems. It also includes the infotainment technology and driver-assistance features familiar from Volvo’s latest models.
According to the manufacturer, this model is the “perfect bridge” for people who are not yet ready for - or simply do not want - a fully electric vehicle. Its figures are certainly notable: 200 km of electric range.
This set-up means the petrol engine can be left unused for virtually every everyday journey. On longer trips, the combustion engine is available to prevent unexpected problems - and range anxiety.
200 km will be shorter in Europe
Volvo’s stated 200 km range would be different in Europe should the XC70 be launched here.
That is because the figure was calculated under the CLTC (China Light-Duty Vehicle Test Cycle), which is less stringent than the equivalent European cycle, the familiar WLTP (Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicles Test Procedure).
As a result, the Chinese 200 km figure is likely to equate to around 150 km of range in Europe. Even so, that would place the Volvo XC70 well above the segment average.
A future unlike its past
The XC70 name also carries some history. The original XC70 was in fact a raised version of the V70 - an estate car with an adventurous character that achieved cult status.
The new XC70 retains that versatile nature, but replaces the estate body style with an SUV format that is taller, wider and roomier. Is that what the market wants? The figures suggest it is, as SUVs continue to dominate consumer preferences.
As mentioned, the XC70 will initially launch only in China. The brand is open to assessing its introduction in other markets - which would make sense. It is the longest-range plug-in hybrid in the Swedish manufacturer’s history.
