Any uncertainty has now been removed: the Tesla Model Y Standard is indeed coming to Portugal, and we already know how much it will cost.

Just days after its unveiling in the North American market, the most affordable Model Y has now been confirmed for Portugal, with the first deliveries scheduled for November.

However, unlike in the United States, there has been no announcement concerning the Model 3 Standard, the low-cost Model 3 variant. At least for now, it will not be crossing the Atlantic.

Tesla also used this announcement to revise the Model Y line-up structure in Europe. Entry-level versions will now be called Standard, while Long Range variants will take the Premium designation. The Model Y Performance is the only version whose name remains unchanged.

What changes with the Tesla Model Y Standard?

To bring down the Model Y's price, the American manufacturer took a straightforward approach: it examined its crossover to identify which features and materials could be removed or simplified.

The result is a model with a redesigned front end, without the full-width LED light bar, headlights similar to those fitted to the new Model 3, and a bespoke front bumper.

At the rear, the most obvious change is the removal of the projected light strip introduced with the model's latest update, known as Juniper.

In addition, the wheels on this new Standard version - now called Aperture - have been reduced to 18 inches and receive new black plastic covers intended to maximise aerodynamic efficiency.

Simplified interior

Although the exterior has changed, the biggest differences are found inside the Tesla Model Y. It loses the large panoramic glass roof that is characteristic of the brand's models. In fact, it is still there, but it is now concealed by the headlining. Apparently, Tesla concluded that this was cheaper than designing an entirely new roof for the model.

The seats are new as well: instead of synthetic leather upholstery, they are now trimmed in fabric. The front seats are no longer ventilated and no longer feature electric adjustment controls. Their heating function has, however, been retained.

There are further omissions: the HEPA filter has been removed, along with electric steering-wheel adjustment and the 8-inch touchscreen for second-row occupants. The 15-speaker premium sound system is also gone; this version uses a simpler seven-speaker system.

Under the front bonnet, the frunk lining has also been removed, as has the centre console between the seats. It has been replaced by a new storage area similar to the one found in the Cybertruck.

On the other hand, it should be noted that this more sparsely equipped version of the Tesla Model Y retains features such as Sentry Mode, Dog Mode, Remote Climate Control, Phone Key, Trip Planner with real-time Supercharger availability, and gaming and entertainment options, including streaming services and YouTube. Autopilot remains available only as a €7,500 option, but adds Full Self-Driving (Supervised).

More than 530 km of range

Tesla describes the Model Y Standard as the “most efficient Model Y ever”, quoting an approved average consumption figure of just 13.1 kWh/100 km - the best figure ever for a Model Y - and a total WLTP range of up to 534 kilometres.

The American brand has not confirmed the output of the rear electric motor or specified the battery pack fitted. However, it is worth remembering that the Model Y Standard launched in the United States was announced with a battery offering 69 kWh of capacity.

How much will the Tesla Model Y Standard cost?

The new Tesla Model Y Standard, which is already available to order, is priced from €39,990, making it the cheapest Tesla Model Y ever.

Compared with the rear-wheel-drive Model Y that will be removed from the range, this represents a €5,000 reduction. That puts the entry-level Model Y at the same price as the most affordable Tesla Model 3, the rear-wheel-drive version.

This is the full Model Y range in Portugal:

  • Model Y Standard - from €39,990;
  • Model Y Premium (Long Range rear-wheel drive) - from €49,990;
  • Model Y Premium (Long Range all-wheel drive) - from €52,990;
  • Model Y Performance - €61,990.

As mentioned above, the first Tesla Model Y Standard units will begin arriving in November. For Europe, every example of this model will be built at Tesla's factory in Berlin, Germany.

Updated at 10:30 - contrary to what was initially stated in the article, FM radio remains fitted as standard on the Model Y Standard.
