Razão Automóvel’s predictions have been confirmed: the Citroën 2CV will indeed return as an affordable electric car.

Xavier Chardon, chief executive of the French brand, confirmed the comeback at Stellantis Investor Day, held today in Auburn Hills, USA, where the new FaSTLAne 2030 strategic plan was unveiled.

Due to arrive in 2028 and expected to cost around €15,000, the new 2CV has already been previewed by a teaser shown at the same event. Its concept car will be revealed at the Paris Motor Show in October.

Citroën 2CV and the Stellantis E-Car project

The new 2CV forms part of Stellantis’ E-Car project, which involves developing at least two models for the European Union’s M1E category of small, affordable electric cars.

Inspired by the past, designed for the future

The teaser released by the brand reveals a silhouette that revives the classic 2CV’s most recognisable cues, beginning with the arched profile that shapes the passenger compartment.

Shared platform and Italian production

This new electric city car will share its technical architecture with the forthcoming electric FIAT Panda and will be built at the Pomigliano d’Arco plant in southern Italy. This industrial site can produce almost 300,000 vehicles annually and currently manufactures the Pandina.

According to Xavier Chardon, the aim remains faithful to the philosophy behind the original 2CV: to make affordable mobility available to as many people as possible. Chardon even stated that “eighty years after the original, the new 2CV will democratise electric mobility”.

The electric-era ‘people’s car’

During the presentation, Citroën’s chief executive underlined the emotional significance of iconic models to the brand: “products alone do not create icons. Icons are what create emotion and bring people closer to brands”.

The new 2CV will be among seven models Citroën intends to introduce before the end of the decade. Four will replace existing offerings, while the new 2CV is one of three entirely new models, alongside a larger electric compact model based on the Smart Car platform, also used by the C3.

With an anticipated entry price of approximately €15,000, the new Citroën 2CV fits into Chardon’s more pragmatic vision of future mobility. In the French brand chief executive’s view, the most relevant cars will not necessarily be the most sophisticated, but those that are simplest and most intuitive to use.
