Following the 100% electric version, the Fiat 600 will also gain an alternative combustion-engined model, called the 600 Hybrid.

As with the Fiat 600e - which is now arriving on the market - the 600 Hybrid will be offered in just two trims: an entry-level version and the range-topping La Prima.

Fiat 600 Hybrid powertrain

The Fiat 600 Hybrid will use the same mild-hybrid powertrain recently introduced in the Jeep Avenger and already fitted to other Stellantis models, including the Peugeot 2008 and Opel Corsa.

It combines a 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol engine producing 100 hp and 205 Nm with a compact electric motor integrated into the six-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox, which is the only transmission available.

The electric motor develops 21 kW (29 hp) and 55 Nm, helping to enhance the Fiat 600 Hybrid’s performance. It is powered by a 48 V battery with a capacity of 0.9 kWh. Peugeot was the first brand to introduce this system:

How does it work?

According to the Italian manufacturer, the system will allow the 600 Hybrid to travel with its combustion engine switched off at speeds below 20 km/h. Provided there is sufficient charge in the battery, this small SUV will always set off in 100% electric mode.

While driving, particularly in urban areas, its 100% electric range can even exceed one kilometre. That may not sound like much, but it is significant for a 48 V mild-hybrid system, as these usually cannot run without the combustion engine while the car is moving.

In addition, the system can recover energy on downhill stretches and during deceleration, using it to recharge the battery.

Overall, Fiat says fuel consumption can be reduced by around 15% compared with a similar combustion-only unit without assistance from this type of system.

How much will it cost?

The new Fiat 600 Hybrid will not reach the domestic market until June, although orders can already be placed.

Prices start at €24,000 for the entry-level model and €29,000 for the La Prima variant. As with the 100% electric Fiat 600e, La Prima is the model’s flagship trim.
