Portugal is among the first three European markets to welcome GAC Aion, a new Chinese brand within the GAC Group. Poland and Finland are the other two, with sales due to begin later this month.

At the 2025 Munich Motor Show, the company unveiled the first two models in its European offensive: the Aion V and Aion UT. The Aion V, a fully electric SUV, will arrive first. The Aion UT, a compact family car with MPV-inspired styling, will not follow until 2026.

GAC Aion V

The Aion V is 4,605 mm long, 1,876 mm wide and 1,686 mm tall. Its dimensions and market positioning place it against rivals including the BYD Atto 3, Renault Scenic and Peugeot e-3008.

Available solely as an electric vehicle, it uses a front-mounted 150 kW (204 hp) motor powered by a 75.3 kWh CATL LFP (lithium iron phosphate) battery. Its claimed combined WLTP range stands at 521 km.

GAC Aion UT

Smaller than its SUV counterpart, the Aion UT measures 4,270 mm in length, 1,850 mm in width and 1,575 mm in height. GAC is positioning it as a competitor to cars such as the Volkswagen ID.3 and MG4.

It too is offered exclusively with electric power, pairing a 100 kW (136 hp) front motor with a 60 kWh LFP battery. This provides a claimed range of up to 500 km on the combined WLTP cycle.

Both models support AC charging at up to 11 kW and DC charging at up to 180 kW, enabling a 10% to 80% charge in just 24 minutes. Inside, they feature an 8.8-inch instrument display and a 14.6-inch central screen.

“These models represent the next stage in our aim to offer European consumers sustainable, high-quality options,” the brand said in a statement.

When will they arrive?

Sales of the GAC Aion V will begin this month. Although Portugal is among the initial markets set to receive it - with Grupo JAP handling imports - details of the Portuguese range and pricing have not yet been released.

A price of €37,000 was announced in Munich, although this may differ between markets. The Aion UT is not due until 2026 and could be priced from below €30,000.

What has already been confirmed is that both models will be manufactured in Europe. Production of the Aion V and Aion UT at Magna Steyr’s facility in Graz, Austria, is scheduled to start as early as next week.

While many components will be imported from China, the added value created through local assembly will allow GAC to avoid European tariffs on electric vehicles made in China, according to sources who spoke to Automotive News.

More new models

Alongside these two cars, the manufacturer brought the HYPTEC HL to Munich, an SUV measuring more than five metres in length that will be available either as a fully electric model or with a range extender.

It also displayed the S7 plug-in hybrid SUV and the E9, a large plug-in hybrid MPV. It remains unconfirmed whether any of these models will be launched on the European market.
