It may be hard to pay attention to the arrival of the more affordable version of the far-from-affordable Mercedes-AMG GT when, over recent weeks, all eyes have been on its most extreme variant.

The GT Black Series is a seriously steroidal machine in car form. It uses the most powerful version yet of the thunderous 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 - rising from the GT R’s 585 hp to a far more substantial 730 hp - and comes with aerodynamic hardware worthy of a racing car.

Naturally, the extremity of this model is reflected in its price. As you might expect, it is by no means the most affordable option, although, in truth, none of the GT range could be described as cheap.

We recently learned that, in Germany, its home market, the Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series would be priced from €335,240. That is more than twice the price of a GT R there, the model immediately below it in the range, which we described when we tested it as “a monster of a car” - remember that video…

And in Portugal, with its taxation system? Naturally, the price had to be higher. In this seaside corner of Europe, the GT Black Series starts at… €410,900. That represents more than €75,000 in tax compared with Germany. And that is only the “starting point”, as we have not yet ventured into the costly - and rather tempting - options list.

Mercedes-AMG GT… the “entry-level” model

Fortunately, there are more attainable choices within the GT line-up, with a new entry point into the German sports car. Where the range was previously arranged as GT, GT S, GT C and GT R, the GT S has now disappeared from the catalogue, with the new standard GT taking its place.

Available as both a coupé and a roadster, the Mercedes-AMG GT gains 54 hp. It even surpasses the previous GT S’s 522 hp, delivering 530 hp and 670 Nm. Its performance matches, and in some respects improves upon, that of the former GT S: 100 km/h arrives in the same 3.8 seconds, while top speed increases from 308 km/h to 312 km/h.

Power continues to go exclusively to the rear wheels through the same seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox, the AMG Speedshift DCT 7G.

This upgrade also brings equipment previously reserved for other GT versions.

Standard equipment and available options

The AMG Ride Control adaptive suspension, an electronic limited-slip rear differential and composite brakes with red callipers are now fitted as standard. The lighter lithium-ion battery and Race driving mode are also available. Optionally, and in conjunction with AMG Dynamic Plus, buyers can specify rear-wheel steering.

The “Night Edition” styling package is now offered as an option, too, with its appearance shown in the official images supplied by Mercedes-AMG to illustrate this article.

How much does the Mercedes-AMG GT cost?

The Mercedes-AMG GT is priced from €190,150 for the Coupé, while the Roadster starts at €209,139 - beyond the reach of ordinary mortals, but it almost looks affordable beside the GT Black Series price…
