The coming months will be particularly busy for Jeep. While 2022 can be seen as an interval, the American brand is now preparing for a great deal more: more SUVs and more electric vehicles.

Following the introduction of the Renegade and Compass e-Hybrid versions, as well as the unveiling of the all-new Avenger - the brand’s first fully electric model - this year will bring the debut of two further new vehicles.

One will be the Recon, a no-compromise, fully electric model. The other will be the Wagoneer, also an electric SUV, with a particular focus on luxury and performance; rumours suggest output of around 600 hp.

For now, however, the spotlight is firmly on the JEEP Avenger. The model is due to reach Portuguese roads during the second quarter of the year, with prices starting from €37,800 - and order books are already open.

When it arrives, it will do so with a major accolade to its name: it was recently named Car of the Year 2023, a first for the American marque.

In Portugal, the Avenger will be offered in three trims - Longitude, Altitude and Summit - but with just one electric powertrain. It develops a maximum 115 kW (156 hp) and 260 Nm of peak torque, while its 54 kWh battery provides a range of up to 404 km.

Is a more extreme Avenger on the way?

Jeep has already demonstrated the compact Avenger’s off-road credentials on several occasions, but the Avenger 4×4 Concept prototype displayed at last year’s Paris Motor Show certainly whetted appetites.

Although it has not yet been confirmed, it would therefore come as no surprise if the American brand introduced an even more adventurous Avenger this year. After all, the prototype seen at the Paris event appeared very close to production specification.

Should it be launched, four-wheel drive would be delivered by a second electric motor on the rear axle. Combined with increased ground clearance, this should enable the Avenger to venture where few models in the segment can go - apart from the differently positioned Dacia Duster 4X4.

Jeep Recon will make its world debut in 2023

Another model expected to be seen for the first time in 2023 - although its launch, including in Europe, is only scheduled for 2024 - is the Recon, effectively a fully electric Wrangler.

Already previewed through several digital sketches, this model is being developed from the ground up as a fully electric vehicle and promises off-road ability on a par with the best Jeep can offer.

Jeep itself says so, revealing that the Recon will be capable of “crossing the demanding Rubicon Trail, one of the USA’s most challenging off-road routes, and reaching the end of the journey with enough range to return to the city and a charging point”. We shall see…

Electric luxury: the Jeep Wagoneer S is on its way

Finally, the last of Jeep’s new models for 2023 will take the form of another electric premium SUV, currently known as the Wagoneer S - although this is not yet its final name.

Like the Recon, the Wagoneer will be a global model, sold in the USA, Europe and several other markets. It will be a more luxurious premium proposition, positioned as one of the brand’s range-topping vehicles.

Very little is known about the Wagoneer S’s technical specifications so far, but the latest rumours point to around 600 hp, an electric range of more than 640 km, and 0–100 km/h acceleration in approximately 3.5 seconds.

As with the Recon, its unveiling should take place this year, while production is not expected to begin until early 2024.
