Tesla Model Y E41 could be a cheaper simplified version

Tesla has spent months signalling that a more affordable model is on the way. Yet talk of production has been followed just as quickly by reports that the project could be scrapped. That is the reality of a volatile market.

What now appears increasingly likely is that - if it does happen - it will not be an entirely new vehicle. Instead, Tesla may introduce cheaper, less well-equipped versions of the Model 3 and Model Y.

Tesla Model Y E41: a simplified version

This time, the details did not come from Elon Musk, but from a hacker known as Green. While examining Tesla firmware data, he found references to a “simplified” Model Y carrying the E41 codename. That part was already known.

Simplified model Y “E41” that was sighted live now appears in the firmware too.
They will have two audio options: “essential” and “essential with commodity”
Backup camera would lose a heater
no “airwave” in console
E41 fascia (performance will also get a fascia update)

The new information concerns some of the potential equipment changes. In these low-cost versions, buyers may have to do without electrically operated seats, automatically folding mirrors, the panoramic glass roof, ambient lighting, a rear display and even the more advanced sound system.

Fewer features to lower the Tesla Model Y price

In their place, Tesla would fit more basic controls, simpler 18-inch wheels and a less sophisticated suspension setup.

If that sounds rather drastic, it is because it is. The aim is to bring the entry price of these versions below €30,000 in certain markets. Only Elon Musk knows what he might pull out of the hat. And, as ever, it could be everything… or nothing.
