After three generations and almost two million sales, Kia Ceed production will come to an end this year. It is a significant milestone: this was the first Kia developed exclusively for Europe, as well as the brand’s first model to be built on the continent, at Žilina in Slovakia.
Introduced in 2006 as the Cee’d - a name changed to Ceed only in 2018, when the third generation arrived - it was Kia’s best-selling European model for several years. That distinction now belongs to the Sportage SUV.
Kia Ceed production ends at Žilina
Ceed production is ending at the Žilina plant to make way for the EV4, which will become Kia’s first electric car manufactured in Europe. The factory simply does not have sufficient capacity to build both models. As well as the Ceed and XCeed, Kia also makes the Sportage there, while production of another electric model, the EV2, is due to join the site in 2026.
“Ending production of the Ceed family frees up our plant in Žilina, Slovakia, to produce the EV4 as we prepare to offer a C-segment electric hatchback for the first time,” said the brand.
Ceed ends, but the XCeed remains
The end of Kia Ceed production - reportedly completed at the beginning of the summer - does not mean the whole family is being discontinued. The XCeed, the range’s crossover, will remain in production. The Proceed, the shooting brake variant, was already withdrawn from production at the end of last year.
Could Kia retain a compact combustion model?
Although Ceed production has stopped, Kia could still remain in the compact family-car segment with combustion-engined models.
The Kia K4, a model equivalent to the Ceed but sold in other markets, has previously been spotted testing in Europe. At the time, there was speculation that the K4 and Ceed could become a single model sold under different names. The K4 was launched in 2024, but it remains uncertain whether it will ever join Kia’s European range.
