Following its debut at the Brussels Motor Show at the start of last month, the Peugeot 408 2026 has now arrived in Portugal, with prices starting from €37,065.

First launched in 2023, the 408 stands out for its revised front end, which is reminiscent of the Peugeot 308, itself updated recently. Its split headlamps receive a more advanced lighting signature, retaining the three LED claws on either side, now linked by shorter segments.

The main headlights - Full LED or LED Matrix, depending on the version - are slimmer and integrated into the outer edges of the redesigned bumpers. For the first time, the 408 features an illuminated front logo, while the “Peugeot” lettering at the rear is illuminated too.

More technology on board

Inside, the i-Cockpit remains the main attraction, combining two 10-inch displays: one for the instrument cluster and another touchscreen for the infotainment system.

Located beneath the central display, the i-Toggles provide configurable shortcuts for features such as navigation, multimedia and even contacts, while the ambient lighting offers a choice of eight colours.

The front seats are AGR-certified and can be specified with electric adjustment, pneumatic massage and heating.

Exclusive plug-in hybrid

The engine line-up is largely unchanged, apart from one major development: the plug-in hybrid version. The Peugeot 408 Plug-in Hybrid now delivers 240 hp of combined power, 15 hp more than its predecessor.

Here is the full list of powertrains available for the Peugeot 408 2026:

  • 408 Hybrid - 1.2 Turbo petrol engine with 136 hp; 21 kW (29 hp) electric motor; 145 hp maximum combined output; e-DCS6 gearbox;
  • 408 Plug-in Hybrid - 1.6 Turbo petrol engine with 180 hp; 92 kW (125 hp) electric motor; 240 hp maximum combined output; 14.6 kWh battery; 85 km electric range (WLTP urban cycle); e-DCS7 gearbox;
  • E-408 - 157 kW (213 hp), 343 Nm of torque; 58.2 kWh battery; 456 km range (WLTP combined cycle).

The E-408 supports rapid direct-current (DC) charging at up to 120 kW, allowing the battery to be replenished from 20% to 80% in around 30 minutes. Meanwhile, the 408 Plug-in Hybrid can be fully charged in approximately 2 hours 5 minutes using a 7.4 kW (32 A) wallbox or the optional 7.4 kW single-phase on-board charger.

In Portugal, the Peugeot 408 range is offered in two trim levels: Allure and GT. In entry-level form, the compact “lion” comes with keyless entry and start, dual-zone automatic climate control, rear parking sensors and emergency braking assisted by a camera and radar, among other features.

The range-topping GT adds front parking sensors, Level 2 semi-autonomous driving, an electric tailgate and further equipment.

The electric Peugeot 408 models, the E-408, also include a journey planner, battery pre-conditioning, Plug & Charge functionality and Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) capability. This makes it possible to use the car as a giant power bank to run, for example, small household appliances.

How much does it cost?

Production remains at the Mulhouse plant in France and, like other Stellantis models, the 408 comes with a warranty of up to eight years or 160,000 km for both the car and its battery.
