Volkswagen is marking 50 years of the GTI badge with the Golf GTI Edition 50, the most powerful version ever of the iconic performance hatch. This limited edition will be available to order in Portugal from €64,434, although the number of cars allocated to the country has not yet been confirmed.
Volkswagen Golf GTI Edition 50 design and performance
The Volkswagen Golf GTI Edition 50 stands out through a range of exclusive details that make it instantly identifiable. On the outside, it features a “GTI 50” logo on the rear spoiler and door-mirror covers, alongside black accents on the roof, mirror housings and exhaust outlets.
Under the bonnet sits the familiar 2.0-litre four-cylinder TSI (EA888) engine, here producing 239 kW (325 PS) and 420 Nm - increases of 60 PS and 50 Nm over the standard GTI.
Power still goes exclusively to the front wheels, as with every GTI, and it is notably just 8 PS short of the four-wheel-drive Golf R.
The additional output has a clear effect on performance: the 0–100 km/h sprint takes 5.3 seconds, 0.6 seconds quicker than the “standard” GTI. Top speed is 270 km/h.
Chassis upgrades and GTI Performance Pack
To manage the extra performance, the Edition 50 receives several revisions to its chassis, front differential and steering. Its suspension has also been reworked, lowering the car by 20 mm compared with the entry-level GTI and by 5 mm against the GTI Clubsport, previously the most powerful GTI at 300 PS.
For buyers wanting more, the GTI Performance Pack is available. This option brings firmer suspension, Bridgestone Potenza Race semi-slick tyres on 19-inch forged wheels - reducing unsprung mass by 2 kg at each corner - and an Akrapovič titanium exhaust that removes a further 11 kg from the overall weight while, naturally, promising a suitably fitting soundtrack.
How much does it cost?
The Volkswagen Golf GTI Edition 50 will be offered in Portugal from €64,434. Deliveries of the first examples are expected during the first quarter of 2026.
