The Kia EV2 is positioned as the most affordable offering in the Korean brand’s new generation of electric cars. In a segment where battery capacity remains a decisive factor, this model delivers a range figure that is unusual for an electric supermini.

Combining compact proportions with more than 450 km of WLTP range, the EV2 comes close to figures traditionally linked with models from higher segments, while retaining a format designed for everyday use.

What is the Kia EV2?

The Kia EV2 is an electric B-SUV developed with the European market in mind, intended for both urban driving and longer journeys.

It measures 4.06 metres long, 1.80 metres wide and approximately 1.57 metres high, with a 2.57-metre wheelbase. These dimensions are made possible by an electric-vehicle-specific platform, which allows interior space to be used more efficiently than in combustion-engined models.

Based on a derivative of the E-GMP platform and using a 400 V electrical architecture, the EV2 focuses on energy efficiency and cost control rather than the more complex solutions found in higher segments.

The Kia EV2 is built at Kia’s factory in Žilina, Slovakia, strengthening the manufacturer’s commitment to European production for models aimed at this market.

Kia EV2 interior and technology

The EV2 cabin adopts Kia’s latest approach, centred on a digital panel that combines the instruments and infotainment system within one continuous display surface.

Its infotainment system brings together navigation, multimedia and vehicle-function management, alongside smartphone connectivity and over-the-air (OTA) software updates, a solution already used in other models from the brand. The digital instrument display presents driving information clearly and can be configured by the driver.

Control layout is designed with ergonomics in mind, pairing physical switches for key functions with digital integration for other operations to keep everyday use straightforward.

For European markets, the EV2 includes driver-assistance systems such as autonomous emergency braking, lane-keeping assist and adaptive cruise control, all in line with current expectations in this segment.

Powertrain and battery

The Kia EV2 is offered with two battery configurations linked to different range levels, with the larger-capacity version capable of travelling up to 453 km on the WLTP cycle.

Kia’s approach for this model is to balance cost with efficiency, using battery solutions developed around durability and managing the cost of use.

Drive comes from an electric motor installed on the front axle, delivering up to 147 hp (108 kW) and 205 Nm in a configuration that prioritises efficiency and mechanical simplicity.

In Standard Range form, it accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 8.7 seconds. The version with the larger battery takes 9.5 seconds to complete the same benchmark. In both cases, top speed is restricted to 160 km/h.

Charging and everyday use

The EV2 supports both alternating-current and direct-current charging, including rapid charging, with its 400 V architecture delivering charging times suited to its position in the segment.

While it does not match the direct-current charging power figures of the brand’s most advanced models, the chosen system enables range to be replenished efficiently in everyday driving conditions.

When charging with alternating current, it is also the first electric Kia to offer optional charging at up to 22 kW.

The combination of range and charging capability helps make use more predictable, reducing the need for continual planning and providing greater flexibility across different types of journey.

Is the Kia EV2 the right choice for me?

The Kia EV2 is aimed at drivers looking for a compact electric model with dimensions suited to urban environments, but enough range for broader day-to-day use.

Its balance of size, range and running costs makes it suitable for regular travel in a variety of settings, including journeys beyond the city.

Those who place greater importance on stronger performance or more interior space, however, may find better-suited alternatives in higher segments of Kia’s range.

Price in Portugal

The Kia EV2 arrives in Portugal in June, with prices starting below €30,000, placing it as the most affordable model in the South Korean brand’s electric range.
