Although they have not shed their camouflage entirely, these are the first production-spec examples of the new electric Renault 5.
They were built at the French manufacturer's Technocentre, where the final production-process details are being completed before they are transferred to the Douai factory, the site where the Renault 5 will actually be manufactured.
Renault says this approach will ensure the required quality standards are met from the very first cars produced.
The first production Renault 5 models
The benefit is the availability of pre-production vehicles that are identical in every respect to those that will go on sale, allowing us to uncover further details of the forthcoming Renault 5.
They are still wearing camouflage, certainly, but it is already possible to see how they differ from the 2021 5 Prototype.
More than 60 cars in total will be produced at Renault's Technocentre, with every one assigned to a wide range of static and dynamic tests.
These are the vehicles subsequently captured in the familiar spy photographs while undergoing trials in every type of environment, from conventional conditions to the most extreme.
Should any adjustments be required, the Technocentre's direct work with the new Renault 5 development team means they can be made before series production begins.
What do we already know about the electric Renault 5?
In brief, the French brand's new all-electric model will use the CMF-B EV platform, which is derived from the CMF-B architecture intended for combustion-engined models.
This decision was made to reduce development and manufacturing costs, which will be around 30% lower than those of the Zoe it is replacing.
As a result, the expected price of the entry-level version of the new electric Renault 5 will be about €25,000.
Available information indicates that the new Renault 5 will offer 125 hp and 150 hp power outputs. Two batteries, with 42 kWh and 52 kWh capacities, will be offered. In terms of range, figures point to 420 km for the larger option.
The biggest surprise - and one of the most eagerly anticipated - will be the Alpine version, called the A290, which aims to offer a fresh interpretation of French hot hatches.
The prototype has already been unveiled, and we have already had the chance to see it:
When will the Renault 5 be unveiled?
There is still no official date for the global unveiling of the new electric Renault 5, although we expect it could happen later this year.
Despite there being no Paris Motor Show this year - which would have been the ideal occasion - Renault has already confirmed that this model will arrive in 2024. We will have to wait and see.
