As electric models arrive, manufacturers are taking different approaches: some simply add an “e” to a vehicle’s name, as with the Citroën ë-C4, while others establish dedicated model families, including Volkswagen’s I.D. and Mercedes-Benz’s EQ. Hyundai has taken the latter route, raising IONIQ to the status of a sub-brand with bespoke models. Its first offering is the IONIQ 5.

Until now, IONIQ had been the South Korean brand’s alternative-powertrain model, offered in hybrid and fully electric forms. It now becomes the first vehicle in Hyundai’s new sub-brand.

Wonhong Cho, Global Marketing Director at Hyundai Motor Company, explains that “with the IONIQ 5, we want to change the paradigm of customers’ experience with our cars, so that they integrate seamlessly into digitally connected lives and an environmentally responsible context”.

Hyundai IONIQ 5 design and platform

The IONIQ 5 is a medium-sized electric crossover built on the new dedicated E-GMP (Electric Global Modular Platform), which uses 800 V (Volts) support technology. It is only the first in a series of new vehicles that will receive numerical names.

A direct rival to models such as the Volkswagen ID.4 and Audi Q4 e-tron, the IONIQ 5 takes inspiration from the 45 concept car, unveiled globally at the 2019 Frankfurt Motor Show. That concept paid homage to the 1975 Hyundai Pony Coupé Concept.

This first model aims to establish its credentials not only through its electric propulsion technology, but also with styling informed by screen pixel technology. Pixel-effect front and rear lights are intended to preview the advanced digital technology available in the model.

Its bodywork stands out for the vast expanse of its individual panels and for the reduced number and size of the panel gaps, creating a more premium impression than has previously been seen on a Hyundai. Alongside this link to the Pony’s styling DNA, “the interior also stands out for its aim of redefining the relationship between the car and its users”, says SangYup Lee, Executive Vice-President and Head of the Hyundai Global Design Center.

Up to 500 km of range

The IONIQ 5 is available with rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive. The two entry-level, two-wheel-drive versions offer two power outputs: 170 hp or 218 hp, both producing 350 Nm of maximum torque. The four-wheel-drive version gains a second electric motor on the front axle, delivering 235 hp, for combined outputs of 306 hp and 605 Nm.

Top speed is 185 km/h in every version, while two battery packs are offered: a 58 kWh unit and a 72.6 kWh unit. The larger battery enables a driving range of up to 500 km.

With its 800 V technology, the IONIQ 5 can add 100 km of driving range in only five minutes when connected to one of the most powerful chargers. Its bidirectional charging capability also allows the owner to power external sources using 110 V or 220 V alternating current (AC).

Cabin space and onboard technology

As is common in electric cars, the wheelbase is particularly long in relation to the overall length, at three metres, which greatly benefits passenger compartment space.

The notably slim backs of the front seats further increase legroom for second-row occupants, who can move their seat forwards or backwards along a 14 cm rail. Similarly, the optional panoramic roof can flood the cabin with light, while an optional solar panel can be fitted to the roof to help add kilometres of range.

The instrument display and central infotainment screen each measure 12.25 inches and sit side by side, like two landscape-oriented tablets. The boot has a capacity of 540 litres, among the largest in this segment, and expands to 1600 litres by folding the rear seat backs, which split 40:60.

More IONIQ models on the way

As early as 2022, the IONIQ 5 will be joined by the IONIQ 6, a saloon with very fluid lines derived from the Prophecy concept car. Under the current plan, a large SUV will follow at the beginning of 2024.
