The new-generation Ford Ranger is packed with fresh developments. Following the new twin-turbo V6 petrol engine in the Raptor version, which we have already had the chance to test, Ford has now unveiled an all-new plug-in hybrid (PHEV) model called the Ford Ranger Plug-In Hybrid.

Although the first deliveries will not take place until early 2025, this newcomer is an important asset in helping the Ford Ranger reinforce its leading position in Europe. It has topped the list of best-selling pick-ups there since 2015.

With its market launch still some way off, Ford has chosen not to disclose the technical specifications of the Ranger Plug-In Hybrid at this stage. As a result, final power and torque figures have not yet been announced.

However, the blue oval brand has confirmed that the Ford Ranger Plug-In Hybrid “will deliver more torque than any other Ranger model”. It will exceed the 500 Nm produced by the 2.0-litre diesel-powered Ranger Raptor, while its powertrain will combine a 2.3-litre EcoBoost petrol engine, an electric motor and a lithium-ion battery.

More than 45 km of all-electric range

Ford has not revealed the battery capacity, but it has already confirmed that this plug-in hybrid system will allow the four-wheel-drive Ranger Plug-In Hybrid to travel more than 45 km in fully electric mode, according to the WLTP cycle.

Compared with Ford’s other plug-in hybrid offerings, such as the Ford Kuga PHEV, which can cover 64 km in fully electric mode, this range is unlikely to be particularly impressive.

Nevertheless, the American manufacturer says it is enough to create “new opportunities for business owners in a growing number of cities with low-emission zones”.

“The Ford Ranger Plug-in Hybrid will help customers move towards an electrified future with more confidence and capability than ever, keeping Ranger at the forefront of innovation and leading the mid-size pick-up segment.”

Electrification has not affected its maximum towing capacity, which remains at 3500 kg - precisely the same figure offered across the rest of the Ranger range.

A giant electric generator

Another distinctive feature of this PHEV Ford Ranger is Pro Power Onboard. This function effectively turns the pick-up into an electric generator, with power sockets built into the load bed and cabin to run power tools and high-consumption equipment at a worksite or remote campsite.

It will be especially useful for users who previously needed to carry a conventional generator in the load bed of their pick-ups. They will be able to leave it at home instead, freeing up rear load space.

When will the Ford Ranger Plug-In Hybrid arrive?

Production of the first Ford Ranger Plug-In Hybrid is scheduled to begin towards the end of 2024, with initial customer deliveries set for early 2025.

Naturally, there is still no price indication for the domestic market. That information is expected to be announced in just a few months, when all the technical details of this plug-in hybrid pick-up are revealed. It will immediately become the most versatile variant in the Ranger line-up.
