18 Motoring Series to Watch During Quarantine

Boredom. A silent enemy - thankfully nowhere near as threatening as the new coronavirus - that has kept hundreds of thousands of people company during this period.

Compulsory quarantine has proved especially challenging for car enthusiasts.

Being away from cars, roads, corners and friends is difficult, but there are fortunately a few ways to satisfy our octane addiction - in our view, the main one is here - and there are always other options.

Here is our selection of motoring series for the coming weeks.

1. Drive to Survive

It is safe to say that this is the series of the moment. The second season of “DRIVE TO SURVIVE” takes viewers behind the scenes of the 2019 Formula World Championship.

It is an outstanding series, essential viewing both for Formula 1 fans and for those who thought they were not.

2. Hyperdrive

Could this be the future of motorsport? Hyperdrive is a Netflix series about racing, where the competition takes on a different scale through its cinematic, exaggerated fictional setting.

Remarkably, the format works. Entertainment is assured.

3. Rust Valley Restorers

Do you enjoy classic cars? Is your dream to buy a car and restore it? Rust Valley Restorers is the series for you.

4. APEX: The Story of the Hypercars

This series introduces viewers to the inner workings of a highly specialised industry: the hypercar industry.

These are cars limited only by imagination. You will discover the stories of Horacio Pagani and Christian von Koenigsegg, the founders of two brands responsible for some of the world’s fastest and most exclusive cars.

5. The Grand Tour

The brilliant former Top Gear trio - May, Hammond and Clarkson - return in The Grand Tour. There are fewer cars and more adventures, alongside the usual jokes and entertainment.

6. Jay Leno’s Garage

One of America’s best-known presenters takes us through his garage and one of the great passions of his life: engines.

Whether it is cars or motorcycles, anything with an engine has a place in Jay Leno’s Garage.

7. Fastest Car

Supercars take on ordinary cars. The series’ premise? Money cannot buy speed. It is pure entertainment that is not only about the cars, but also their drivers.

8. The Gymkhana Files

Go behind the scenes of one of YouTube’s greatest automotive sensations: Ken Block’s Gymkhanas. It reveals another side of the ‘showman’ who once dreamed of becoming a rally driver.

8. Paul Hollywood – A Great British Road Trip

The challenge of this series? Buckle up for a journey with Paul Hollywood, the celebrated chef and car enthusiast, as he explores the cars and culture of France, Germany and Italy.

Platform: Netflix.

9. Saudi Women’s Driving School

The world is not uniform. Watch interviews with students at Saudi Arabia’s first driving school for women, as well as the tensions within a country still striving for gender equality.

Platform: HBO.

10. Comedians In Cars Getting Coffee

Jerry Seinfeld’s travelling talk show blends coffee, laughter and classic cars with caffeine-fuelled adventures alongside some of comedy’s biggest names - and more besides.

11. Wheeler Dealers

Car dealer Mike Brewer, now joined by engine specialist Ant Anstead - Edd China left at the end of season 13, although you can still watch him in earlier seasons - work together to save classic cars. It is a mission to restore classic vehicles on a tight budget, with plenty of adventures along the way.

12. Top Gear

The world’s most famous motoring programme. It hardly needs an introduction, does it?

13. Misfit Garage

The formula is not new and has been running since 2004. This American reality show follows the classic-car restoration adventures taking place in a workshop.

14. Bodywork and Paintwork

Engine artist Dave Kindig is already a familiar name among Discovery Channel fans of the genre. His passion for creating unique models from a blank sheet of paper has resulted in some of the most spectacular transformations ever shown on the channel.

15. Fast N´Loud

Buying cars in terrible condition, restoring them and making money in the process: that is the goal pursued in every episode of Fast N’Loud, one of television’s most successful series of its kind.

16. SOS CARS

Fuzz Townshend and Tim Shaw continue their mission to find classic cars. Chronic rust, hard-to-find parts and broken engines push the presenters to their limits, all so owners can see their cars as they deserve to be seen again.

17. Grand Prix Driver

GRAND PRIX Driver enters the secretive world of Formula 1, providing unprecedented access to McLaren’s inner workings.

18. West Coast Customs

One of the most extravagant programmes in its field. Extreme transformations, radical solutions and a few famous clients are among the ingredients you can expect from this series.
