Škoda’s flagship model, the Superb, became the Czech manufacturer’s first car to receive a plug-in hybrid powertrain in 2019. Seven years on, it is once again taking on a pioneering role by introducing a more powerful version of its plug-in hybrid system.
More powerful Škoda Superb plug-in hybrid
Previously offered with 204 PS, the Superb will now also be available with a 272 PS plug-in hybrid powertrain producing 400 Nm of torque. This is the same system used in several other Volkswagen Group models, including the Volkswagen Tiguan and CUPRA Formentor.
Despite the power increase, the Škoda Superb’s mechanical layout remains unchanged. It continues to use the 1.5 TSI engine, which now produces 177 PS - 27 PS more than before - paired with an 85 kW (115 PS) electric motor supplied by the same 25.7 kWh battery.
Charging and performance
Charging capability is unchanged, too: the new Superb plug-in hybrid supports up to 11 kW AC charging and up to 50 kW DC charging. Using the latter, the battery can be charged from 10% to 80% in just 26 minutes.
The added power also brings stronger performance. The 0–100 km/h sprint now takes 7.1 seconds, while top speed rises to 225 km/h.
An all-electric range figure has not yet been announced. However, it is expected to remain above 100 km on the combined WLTP cycle. The current version offers up to 140 km of range, depending on the specification.
When will it arrive?
This new plug-in hybrid system will be exclusive to the Superb saloon body style and will only be available with the Sportline and Laurin & Klement trim levels. The 204 PS version will remain available in Selection trim and in the estate body style.
Škoda has not yet disclosed the price of the most powerful Superb in the range. For comparison, the Sportline and Laurin & Klement versions fitted with the 204 PS plug-in hybrid system start at €54,526 and €55,802 respectively. The new 272 PS powertrain is expected to cost more.
