Honeywell IntuVue RDR-7000 radar upgrade for the AW139 fleet
Honeywell Aerospace has announced that Omni Táxi Aéreo, one of the world’s largest offshore helicopter operators, has selected its IntuVue RDR-7000 weather radar system to upgrade its full fleet of 33 Leonardo AW139 helicopters.
The upgrade underlines the operator’s commitment to safety and reliability during critical missions, where weather conditions can be demanding and diversion options are limited.
With around 88 helicopters in operation worldwide, a substantial proportion of Omni’s fleet consists of AW139 aircraft. Its decision to fit every aircraft with Honeywell’s radar reflects confidence in the technology’s ability to support pilots’ decision-making, improving situational awareness and protection from adverse weather.
Roberto Coimbra, CEO of Omni Táxi Aéreo, said: “Safety is the foundation of our work, and giving pilots the clearest possible view is essential. Upgrading our entire AW139 fleet with Honeywell’s radar is an investment in our professionals, passengers and the reliability of our operations.”
Real-time weather alerts and pilot support
The IntuVue RDR-7000 provides early, accurate alerts for storms, turbulence, hail, lightning and wind shear. It monitors the atmosphere in real time, building a detailed picture of conditions along the planned route.
Independent testing indicates that the system can predict turbulence with up to 93% accuracy, cutting related incidents by more than half.
José Vinicius, Honeywell Aerospace’s senior regional sales manager, noted that the system’s automation reduces crew workload, enabling them to concentrate fully on the mission. The radar also receives remote over-the-air updates, keeping the fleet continually current while minimising downtime.
The RDR-7000’s 3D volumetric scanning technology separates overlapping weather systems, delivering a more comprehensive view of the airspace than conventional radar. Its range can reach 320 nautical miles, depending on altitude and atmospheric conditions.
Compatible with a range of platforms beyond the AW139, the IntuVue RDR-7000 marks a significant step forward in safety and operational efficiency for aviation missions in demanding environments, particularly in the offshore sector.
