BYD's move into plug-in hybrids is not new, and it is strengthening its offering in the Portuguese market with a new Seal U DM-i variant that delivers a longer electric-only range of 125 km on the combined WLTP cycle. Total range, combining electric and petrol power, stands at 1125 km.

The Chinese SUV's new variant is called Comfort. It sits between the Boost and Design versions, with prices starting from €44,490. Despite occupying the middle position in the line-up, Comfort provides the longest electric range: its 125 km exceeds the Boost's 80 km and the Design's 70 km.

To achieve this figure, BYD has equipped the Seal U DM-i Comfort with a larger 26.6 kWh battery. The other variants use an 18.3 kWh battery.

Otherwise, the Comfort is mechanically the same as the Boost. Its maximum combined output is 160 kW (218 hp), with 300 Nm of torque. These figures come from a 1.5-litre petrol engine working alongside an electric motor, also positioned at the front, giving it front-wheel drive.

Charging the BYD Seal U DM-i Comfort

As with the other versions, charging is possible via alternating current (AC) at up to 11 kW, or direct current (DC) at up to 18 kW. Using DC charging, the battery takes 55 minutes to go from 30% to 80%.

The BYD Seal U range includes both electric and plug-in hybrid models. The electric Seal U versions arrived first, followed shortly afterwards by the plug-in hybrids. Adding the plug-in hybrid variants enabled BYD both to broaden the range and to avoid European tariffs imposed on electric cars imported from China.

With the arrival of this Comfort version, which raises electric range to 125 km, the Chinese SUV line-up in Portugal is now made up as follows:
