FIAT is best known for its compact city cars, but the Tris marks a complete first for the brand: an electric cargo tricycle that looks very much like a modern successor to the iconic Piaggio Ape 50.
FIAT Tris: compact electric cargo transport
At just 3.17 m long, the Tris can carry a Euro pallet and loads of up to 540 kg. It will be offered in three forms - chassis cab, flatbed and pick-up - designed for use in both urban centres and rural areas.
Its powertrain is already familiar, as it is shared with the Topolino and Ami. It delivers just 9 kW (12 hp) and 45 Nm, while its 48 V lithium battery has a 6.9 kWh capacity, providing a range of 90 km. It plugs into a standard domestic socket and takes 4h40min to recharge fully.
Stability and everyday equipment
Three-wheel vehicles do not have the strongest reputation for stability, but FIAT says the Tris addresses this with a wide rear track, 12-inch wheels and a long wheelbase. Its top speed is 45 km/h.
Although it is a straightforward working vehicle, it still includes the essentials: LED headlamps, three-point seat belts, a 5.7-inch digital instrument panel and even a lockable glovebox. A broad selection of accessories for day-to-day use will also be available.
Built in Morocco, the FIAT Tris will launch in Africa and the Middle East this year. However, FIAT has not ruled out other markets, including Europe. And why not?
