While AMG’s first electric model has been attracting the headlines, the announcement of a new AMG GT Black Series is enough to shift attention elsewhere. Affalterbach has just released the first images - still showing it in camouflage - of what the brand describes as the “most extreme” AMG ever.
Confirmation has only arrived now, although the story began last year with the unveiling of the Mercedes-AMG GT Track Sport Concept. That prototype provided the starting point for two separate cars: the successor to the AMG GT3 and the forthcoming road-going GT Black Series.
Motorsport DNA for the road
The new Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series is being developed alongside the GT3 and will also serve as the homologation model for the racing car. This strategy further strengthens the direct connection between track and road - one of AMG’s core principles.
No technical details have been disclosed yet, but the pledge is unambiguous: to raise the benchmark for performance, handling and track focus. The German marque even promises a “no-compromise” approach, signalling a car that will be even more radical than its predecessor.
Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series V8 engine
Rumours suggest that the long bonnet will conceal the new 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 with a flat-plane crankshaft, the M 177 Evo. It made its debut in a very different machine: the extensively revised S-Class. A flat-plane crankshaft is not new to the Black Series, having first appeared in the previous GT Black Series.
In the most extreme Mercedes-AMG GT, the twin-turbo V8 produced 730 hp and 800 Nm of torque, making the Black Series AMG’s most powerful V8 ever. The next generation is expected to exceed those figures.
Testing programme already underway
The first prototypes of the new Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series have been at an advanced stage of development since late 2025, undertaking an intensive test programme at several European circuits.
These include the Algarve International Circuit, alongside other familiar venues such as the Nürburgring Nordschleife, where AMG is expected to carry out the final tuning of what promises to be its most track-focused model to date.
For now, the brand has not provided an unveiling date or technical specifications, but one point is certain: AMG is not ready to give up combustion engines in its most extreme models.
