The new Citroën C5 Aircross is far more than a straightforward update of its predecessor. This second-generation model moves to a new platform, becomes larger, introduces fully electric variants and restructures the Portuguese line-up around four trim levels: You, Plus, Business and Max.

This buying guide sets out what has changed in this model and how those changes affect the powertrains, equipment and pricing.

What is the Citroën C5 Aircross?

Now in its second generation, the Citroën C5 Aircross is the brand’s C-segment SUV and is based on Stellantis’s STLA Medium platform. This technical architecture is significant because it can accommodate several powertrain types within the same model, including hybrid and fully electric systems, without reducing interior space.

Rather than being solely about its size, this platform gives the model the flexibility to suit a range of uses, from urban driving to longer-distance journeys, through different mechanical options.

Measuring 4.652 metres long and 1.93 metres wide, with a 2.784-metre wheelbase, the new C5 Aircross is substantially bigger than the previous model. That extra size directly benefits rear-seat passengers, while boot capacity remains at 651 litres, increasing to 1985 litres with the seats folded down.

Design and dimensions

The styling reflects the structural transformation, replacing the previous generation’s softer rounded lines. Its front end is now more upright and sharply defined, while the three-point light signature brings it closer to Citroën’s latest design identity.

Its proportions are more balanced, with the vehicle gaining 160 mm in length and 60 mm in wheelbase compared with its predecessor. This growth is not merely visual: it has a direct effect on cabin room and everyday usability, particularly for drivers who regularly carry passengers in the second row.

The availability of wheels up to 20 inches enhances its road presence, although functionality remains the priority rather than purely aesthetic appeal.

What changes in the new Citroën C5 Aircross?

The most important development is the platform. Moving to STLA Medium enables the C5 Aircross to offer a fully electric version for the first time, something unavailable in the previous generation.

This change also brings a full reorganisation of the range. In Portugal, the line-up begins with the 145 hp hybrid, includes a 213 hp electric model and a 225 hp plug-in hybrid, while an electric version with greater range has already been confirmed.

The increased dimensions deliver a genuine improvement in interior room, while the cabin adopts a more digital layout. This is not an isolated evolution but a fundamental one, directly changing the way the model is used.

Interior and technology

The cabin is one of the areas where the progress is most apparent. Every version comes with a 10″ digital instrument panel and a vertically mounted 13″ central display, which now handles most of the vehicle’s functions.

This waterfall-effect screen includes wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Bluetooth connectivity for two devices at the same time, DAB+ digital radio and connected services. Better-equipped versions add 3D navigation and a natural voice-recognition system with ChatGPT integration, enabling more direct interaction with the system.

The interior retains a practical approach, with physical controls for key functions such as climate control. Differences between trims are most noticeable in comfort and perceived quality, through Advanced Comfort seats in several configurations and adjustment levels, including electric adjustment, heating, ventilation and massage functions in higher-specification versions.

Engines, range and consumption

The Portuguese range starts with three distinct options. The 145 hp hybrid combines a 136 hp 1.2-litre three-cylinder turbo engine with a 28 hp electric motor integrated into the six-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox, for a maximum combined output of 145 hp. Its battery has 0.88 kWh of total capacity and helps lower consumption in urban use, while combined range exceeds 950 km.

At the top of the initial offering is the 213 hp (157 kW) electric Citroën ë-C5 Aircross. It uses a battery with 73.7 kWh of usable capacity and offers a WLTP range of between 498 and 520 km, with claimed consumption of between 13.2 and 13.8 kWh/100 km. AC charging is available at up to 11 kW, while DC charging can reach 160 kW, allowing the battery to be charged from 20% to 80% in around 30 minutes.

The 225 hp plug-in hybrid, equipped with a 21.5 kWh battery, has an electric range close to 100 km. A later arrival has also been confirmed: a 230 hp electric version with a higher-capacity 96.9 kWh battery and a range of up to 680 km on the combined WLTP cycle.

Equipment and versions

The range is divided into four equipment levels: You, Plus, Business and Max. The distinction is not limited to finer details, but also concerns the type of use each version supports.

You is the entry-level trim and covers the essentials in safety, connectivity and comfort. Plus adds greater on-board comfort and a more refined interior presentation. Designed for professional customers, Business has a similar basis to Plus but prioritises equipment suited to intensive use.

Max is the most comprehensively equipped version and brings together the most advanced technologies, including 3D navigation, ChatGPT voice recognition, a 360° camera system and Citroën Matrix LED headlights.

Whatever the trim level, all versions feature Advanced Comfort suspension with progressive hydraulic cushions, a 13″ infotainment display and a core set of driver-assistance systems.

Who is this model for?

The new Citroën C5 Aircross is suited to buyers seeking a family SUV who want to match the powertrain to their intended use.

The 145 hp hybrid is the simplest and most straightforward choice, aimed at those who do not want to rely on charging and value overall range. The plug-in hybrid is the middle-ground solution for drivers who can use electric mode day to day but still need complete flexibility on longer journeys. The electric version, meanwhile, is better suited to those with predictable daily driving patterns who want to reduce running costs while retaining enough range for longer trips.
