Millions have been sold, they feature in dozens of models and are part of everyday life for thousands of drivers in Portugal. Yet not everyone is aware that Stellantis’ PureTech 1.0 and 1.2 engines, despite their strong reputation for efficiency, fuel economy and availability, also have a sensitive technical history. This is particularly true of units built between 2014 and 2022.
The faults chiefly concern EB2DT and EB2ADTS engines - the internal codes identifying turbocharged PureTech 1.2 units - as well as certain EB0 naturally aspirated 1.0 engines. They are linked to units manufactured from April 2014 to June 2022. According to Stellantis, engines produced after this period incorporate upgrades that addressed the reported weaknesses and are not affected.
Stellantis models with potentially affected PureTech engines
This table brings together every Stellantis model which, between April 2014 and June 2022, may be covered by a recall operation or an extended warranty:
There are further models using petrol PureTech engines, including the Jeep Avenger and FIAT 600, but these are not part of this group because they use the improved post-June 2022 version of the engine.
In 2023, Stellantis introduced a hybrid variant that debuted a new development of the PureTech engine: the timing belt was replaced with a timing chain. Find out more details below.
What is the issue?
For several years, reports have continued to build of abnormal oil consumption and premature timing-belt failures. The latter is particularly concerning because it runs in oil, unlike conventional belts, and can deteriorate without warning. This may create debris that blocks the lubrication circuits. In the most serious cases, the engine can even fail completely.
In response to the number of cases, Stellantis introduced two measures:
- An extension of the warranty to 10 years or 175,000 km, available to customers who have followed the maintenance schedule precisely.
- Retroactive compensation for repairs carried out between 2022 and 2024, provided the work was completed by authorised workshops and in accordance with the manufacturer’s requirements.
There is also an official online platform - stellantis-support.com - through which customers can submit their cases, with supporting documentation and prior registration.
PureTech engine problem can be resolved
Despite the understandable frustration among many owners, it is worth making clear that not every engine will suffer a fault. With monitoring, proper maintenance and timing-belt replacement at the right intervals - now brought forward to 60,000 km - PureTech units remain efficient engines.
In any event, Stellantis has announced that it will extend its compensation policy to European customers affected by PureTech engine problems. This includes earlier-generation 1.0 and 1.2 engines, also known as EB units. The measure supplements the extended-warranty programme introduced in March 2024.
It is essential that all work follows the recommended procedures. Replacing the timing belt, for example, requires care over the type of oil used and thorough cleaning of the circuits; otherwise, the issue may recur.
