Whenever a «Benz» model is updated, its «AMG» counterpart follows suit. Having seen the refreshed Mercedes-Benz GLE range yesterday, it is now time to meet the Mercedes-AMG GLE and GLE Coupé.

Mercedes-AMG GLE and GLE Coupé exterior updates

There are only minor visual changes to the Mercedes-AMG GLE models, too. The GLE 53, GLE 63 S, GLE 53 Coupé and GLE 63 S Coupé gain a new LED light signature, rear lights with redesigned internal elements, fresh paint colours and new wheel designs. Finally, the “53” receives a reworked bumper intended to bring its appearance closer to that of the “63”.

Inside, Mercedes-AMG has confined its changes to a few colours and trim finishes. As with the «Benz» GLE models, the Mercedes-AMG versions now feature the second-generation MBUX system, accompanied by a 12.3-inch display.

More standard equipment

As already seen on the updated Mercedes-AMG CLA, the Affalterbach brand has also expanded the standard equipment offering for the revised GLE and GLE Coupé.

For instance, the GLE 53 4MATIC+ now includes items such as an electric panoramic roof, automatic high beam, the AMG Performance exhaust system and a 360º camera as standard.

Moving to the GLE 53 4MATIC+ Coupé, this equipment list is joined by «luxuries» such as the MBUX system with augmented reality. Meanwhile, the GLE 63 S 4MATIC+ Coupé comes as standard with the “Air Balance Package”, a head-up display and even a temperature-controlled cup holder.

What has changed mechanically?

The Mercedes-AMG GLE and GLE Coupé retain the engines used previously: a 3.0-litre six-cylinder unit for the “53” and a «throaty» 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 for the “63”, both paired with a 48 V mild-hybrid system.

The inline six-cylinder still produces 435 hp, although a software revision and a larger turbocharger have increased torque from 520 Nm to 560 Nm. As a result, the 0–100 km/h sprint now takes 5s rather than the previous 5.3s.

The 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8, meanwhile, remains unchanged, continuing to deliver 612 hp and 850 Nm of torque.

Both engines are mated to a nine-speed automatic gearbox, the 4MATIC+ all-wheel-drive system and “AMG RIDE CONTROL+” air suspension, whose software has been updated.

When will they arrive?

The Mercedes-Benz GLE and GLE Coupé are expected to start arriving in July, and the same applies to the Mercedes-AMG GLE and GLE Coupé. Prices have not yet been announced.
