Ford Ranger Raptor: power, equipment and price
The new Ranger Raptor is the most powerful model of its kind ever offered in Europe and, without question, one of the most impressive Fords we have seen in recent years.
Ford Performance’s “super” pick-up needs little introduction. From its 3.0-litre twin-turbo petrol V6, producing 292 hp and 491 Nm, to its electronically controlled Fox Live Valve dampers, every aspect has been developed to deliver off-road performance.
Although its underlying formula remains that of the previous generation, the new Ranger Raptor has been improved across the board to make the finished product even more striking.
Its price is equally striking. In Portugal, at the time this article was published, it starts at 85 137 euros - a substantial increase over the just over 60 000 euros charged for the first-generation Raptor, which used a 213 hp 2.0-litre twin-turbo Diesel engine.
Part of that increase can be attributed to familiar factors, including raw-material costs, inflation and component shortages. However, Portuguese taxation is undoubtedly one of the biggest contributors to the new Ranger Raptor’s price.
Spain offers a clear comparison: there, the Ford Ranger Raptor’s starting price is around 76 000 euros, approximately 9000 euros lower than in Portugal.
Interestingly, the base price is almost identical in both countries. It stands at 56 441 euros in Portugal and 56 321 euros in Spain.
Where does the difference come from?
The gap is down to Portuguese taxation. Of the 85 137 euros paid for a Ford Ranger Raptor in Portugal, 28 696 euros are taxes.
Portugal’s VAT rate is 23%, and buyers must also take account of Vehicle Tax (ISV), which is based on engine capacity and CO₂ emissions.
Starting with the Ranger Raptor’s Portuguese base price, the ISV must be added - 11 926 euros in this instance. The 23% VAT is then levied on that combined amount, comprising the base price plus ISV, which means VAT accounts for a further 15 919 euros.
Adding everything together brings the price to the roughly 85 000 euros Ford charges for this model in Portugal.
Annual tax and revenue from Ford Ranger Raptor sales
These calculations exclude the Single Circulation Tax (IUC). As the Ranger Raptor is classified as a light commercial vehicle, this amounts to 56,57 euros per year.
How much goes to the State’s coffers?
For every new Ford Ranger Raptor sold, 28 696 euros go to the Portuguese State.
Taking into account that “the sales volume of the petrol Ford Ranger Raptor has already exceeded 80 units”, as João Ferro, Ford Portugal’s head, told us in the latest episode of Auto Rádio, the Portuguese State has already collected more than 2 million euros from sales of this pick-up: 2,296 million, to be more precise.
These are remarkable figures, illustrating just how punitive Portuguese vehicle taxation can be for this type of vehicle. Yet, as João Ferro explained, this has not harmed sales of the pick-up in Portugal.
“The Ford Ranger Raptor is an undeniable success,” he said, explaining that Portugal is “the European market where the Raptor sales mix is highest”. Indeed, Ford sells more Raptor versions of the Ranger in Portugal than it does the more conventional variants.
“The Portuguese public has a strong appetite for performance vehicles,” he added, having said that he is himself surprised by the more than 80 Ranger Raptors Ford has sold since the new model arrived last October.
