Perhaps it is too soon to mention Christmas, but we could not resist. Unwrapping what is new in a Porsche 911 GT3 is always an eagerly anticipated occasion for anyone who loves cars.
A manual gearbox, a naturally aspirated engine, a chassis honed by wizards (not the ones you are thinking of…), and many other qualities make the Porsche 911 GT3 a treat for the child within us.
Yet actual children have cause for celebration too. For the first time in the GT3 range, rear seats are available as an option - and ISOFIX is included. There is therefore no longer any reason to leave the children at home. After nursery, we can head straight to a track day.
Those occupying the most important seat in the cabin can choose sports seats with electric adjustment and heating, or seats featuring a lighter carbon-fibre structure.
Further ahead, rather than the more usual engine-start button, the 911 GT3 retains a rotary ignition switch. Naturally, it sits to the left of the steering column.
Another new feature is positioned directly in front of the driver. The instrument cluster is now fully digital, while retaining a customisable layout. In “track screen” mode, the rev counter becomes even more prominent, with 9000 rpm able to sit precisely at the 12 o’clock position.
Racing suit
Almost unnoticed, 25 years have passed since the first Porsche 911 GT3 was unveiled. It was created to deliver the greatest possible driving enjoyment while being even more effective on track than the other versions in this range.
For the 911 GT3 (992.2), Porsche has refined several aerodynamic details, most notably around the front spoiler and the underside of the body, to create greater downforce. The redesigned front light units eliminate the need for additional lights in the bumper, freeing up room for more generously sized air intakes.
At the rear, both the diffuser and air intakes adopt a new design, while the rear wing now gains new angular endplates.
Less apparent are the new front suspension wishbones, whose shape helps generate additional downforce while also improving brake cooling. These work alongside solutions inherited from the current GT3 RS, designed to control the body’s longitudinal movements even more effectively.
Evening wear
Available from the Porsche 911 GT3’s launch, the Touring Package preserves a more classic body shape without allowing anyone to forget that this is a GT3. In place of the enormous rear wing, it features an extendable version paired with an additional fin beneath the body.
Inside, the more traditional look brings high-quality leather and seats that place greater emphasis on comfort. Here, for the first time, they also feature a small release handle, allowing the front seats to fold forward and provide access to the optional rear seats.
Constantly evolving
Whichever appearance is chosen, the Porsche 911 GT3 continues to be powered by a six-cylinder boxer engine. Its capacity now stands at 4.0 l and output at 510 cv, still without any form of forced induction.
A six-speed manual gearbox with a shorter final-drive ratio or a seven-speed PDK automatic is offered for both versions. With the latter, however, the Porsche 911 GT3 can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.5s and reach a top speed of 311 km/h. With the manual, the same “exercise” takes 3.9s, while the claimed top speed is 313 km/h.
How much does the Porsche 911 GT3 cost?
It remains to discuss Porsche’s asking price for this remarkable “gift”. Both the 911 GT3 and the 911 GT3 with the Touring Package will be available to order from the end of this year, with a starting price of 275 752 euros.
After that, three significant options are offered for the 911 GT3: the Weissach Package requires an investment of 31 759 euros; the Leichtbau package - available only with the Touring - adds 47 251 euros to the starting price.
In addition to those two, and only for the rear-winged 911 GT3, Porsche also offers the Clubsport Package, intended for those who take their sports car to the track more often. It includes a steel safety cage bolted into the rear, a six-point driver’s harness, a handheld fire extinguisher and, best of all, it costs nothing.
As is customary with every Porsche model, the new 911 GT3 is also available with a wide range of options, allowing each example of this Zuffenhausen icon to be personalised. All that remains is to send the letter to Father Christmas. Is there still time?
